Who is Rai?

Rai is the main character of the PlayStation 2 ®/PlayStation Portable ® video game, Code Geass: Lost Colors, from a story aside of the main plot of the series and manga Code Geass. Rai also appears as the protagonist of the second Nintendo DS game, Code Geass R2: Banjou no Geass Gekijou. Along with the male design used in Lost Colors, a female design for Rai has been created for female players. Rai's role has been completely change though for this game. S/he is instead a transfer student attending Ashford High for a month. Rai also does not have the Geass ability s/he had in Lost Colors.

The name Rai (ライ) seems to be derived on how the word "liar" is written in Japanese (ライアー). This silver haired guy with deep blue-iced eyes is a geass user, owner of a variant of the geass (a mysterious power whichs habilities depends on what the user's deep wishes are) named "absolute obedience", similiar to Lelouch's one, Rai is able to command people to do as he wishes through the sound of his voice, isntead of Lelouch that needs eye contact. This means that any person able to hear Rai can be affected by it.

Rai's story Rai was once a prince born from the Britannian and Japanese royalty (related to the Sumeragi house which Kaguya belongs to). But he, his mother and his younger sister were ill treated by the rest of the family due their status as "outsiders" and "half-caste". So, in order to protect his mother and younger sister, Rai made a contract with V.V. and acquired the power of Geass using it to ascend to power after killing his father and half-brothers. One day, Britannia was invaded by a neighbor country without warning. Outraged, Rai quickly ordered a full counteroffensive. It's in that moment when his Geass went out of control causing all who heard him, including the civilians, to take up arms against the invaders. Although the enemy army was successfully repelled, there were massive casualties on Britannia's side, including his own little sister and mother. Overwhelmed by sadness, loneliness and guilt, Rai went as far as wish for his own death. V.V. who gave him his Geass did not allow that, saying that he still had to fulfill the contract they made, but Rai had no one to protect now, he lost his reason to live, actually, he murdered his reason to live. And V.V. decided to seal Rai inside a Thought Elevator instead. At that occasion, Rai also used his own Geass on himself in order to forget everything.

Decades later, Rai was found by General Bartley's team during their research in Kamine Island and sent to the same Code-R facility where C.C. was. He was put through several kinds of experiments, including Knightmare training and artificial reinforcement of his body. He eventually managed to escape by using his Geass and shortly after found his way into the Ashford Academy. When he was first discovered, Rai was in a weakened state and he had lost the memories of his past. This lead the President of the Student Council, Milly Ashford, to give him shelter. He was then allowed to spend his days on the academy as a provisionally enrolled student until his memories return.

Skills Rai possesses high situation-assessment abilities and commanding skills, along with physical abilities and Knightmare Frame piloting skills that go beyond that of normal individuals. In addition. He can be the pilot of the Lancelot Club if the player choses the Britannian Military Route, or the Gekka Pre-Production Test Type if the player choses the Order of the Black knights.

Geass Described as a variant of the "power of absolute obedience", relies on sound propagation.

• It is visually represented in animated works as a expanding red globe, much like Rolo's Geass.


• It can affect all those who hear him, including himself.


• Of course, deaf people are immune; Since this power is only conveyed by Rai's natural voice, it cannot be propagated through relays like speakers and tape recorders.


• Effective range is limited to a distance in which Rai can be heard and understood. It can be used just once per person.


• Rai's geass can be used in people who has been geassed by Lelouch and viceversa.
